The conditions were similar to that of the neighboring Cape Coast Castle. In the dungeons light could only enter through the doorways or a few small holes at either end of the ceiling.
The Governor’s chambers were located on the top level. The women’s dungeons were directly off the courtyard below. His living quarters gave him a clear view of the courtyard, making it convenient for him to select personal concubines from amongst the women. A staircase was constructed that led directly up to the Governor’s rooms.
The women slaves were paraded in the courtyard and the Governor would select one to be his concubine. If she refused, she would be made to hold a cannonball for the entire day. If she failed, she was killed.
