Elmina Castle is much smaller than Cape Coast Castle. There hasn't been as much restoration done here as in Cape Town Castle. It has a more authentic, historical feel.
The conditions were similar to that of the neighboring Cape Coast Castle. In the dungeons light could only enter through the doorways or a few small holes at either end of the ceiling.
The Governor’s chambers were located on the top level. The women’s dungeons were directly off the courtyard below. His living quarters gave him a clear view of the courtyard, making it convenient for him to select personal concubines from amongst the women. A staircase was constructed that led directly up to the Governor’s rooms.
